We’re looking for a Senior Project Editor with some previous experience of working within book publishing and ideally children’s licenced books to join their team. Positions like this don’t come along very often in Bath – It’s a real gem!
The Candidate: The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate 3+ years’ experience in children’s non-fiction publishing, ideally including a minimum of 1 years’ experience working in license publishing, ideally at senior level.
We are looking for someone with extensive hands-on editorial experience: writing, copyediting, proofreading, research; exceptional editorial standards and a keen eye for detail are key as is the ability to write creatively for specific audiences and target market.
Key tasks: Assist Managing Editor in the day-to-day management of the license publishing programme, line manage a team of assistant editors and to create and develop an agreed list of titles.
Principal accountabilities:
• Work with Managing Editor to manage publishing programme inline with target dates and to drive book development forward.
• Oversee book projects across a broad range of high-profile licenses and major movie programmes.
• In collaboration with the Managing Editor devise and manage a small launch programme with in-house team or outsourcers.
• Line manage team of Assistant Editors.
• Motivation and development of staff through coaching & mentoring.
• Provide a critical assessment of the work of others and appraisals and personal development plans devised and actioned.
• Actively manage and problem-solve workload within team.
• Ensure high editorial standards and communication and commercial acumen.
• Understand and execute character style guides.
• Liaise with licensors and out of house contributors to acquire the correct materials to create and adapt titles to suit all company markets.
• Monitor own and team project schedules ensuring they meet key dates.
• Keep production controllers up to date with schedule changes and flag up late submissions.
• Project manage own titles from concept to print.
• Page plan, write, edit and proof check.
• Create material suitable for the target market and that meets customer requirements.
• To produce book projects that reflect brand values and delivers real consumer benefit and value for money.
• Write accurate and clear editorial briefs for editors or outsourcers and have input into project/design briefs.
• Work collaboratively with design team.
• Produce sales material at required time and provide back-up information required by sales.
• Have an awareness of production costs and budgeting.
• Liaise with Product Technologist about safety requirements, up-front testing and other safety issues.
• Ensure in-house database reflects correct project specifications and status.
• Suggest commercial ideas for new books/packages.
• Contribute ideas for new and/or improved processes and team development.
• Establish and maintain an awareness of relevant publishing media, marketing and product.
