About the Job

This is an excellent opportunity for a focused individual to develop their career working as an Apprentice Systems Administrator for a well-established, Cheshire based software development company. As part of a Higher Level 4 IT Apprenticeship, you?ll gain hands-on experience, industry recognised Microsoft, CompTIA and ITIL qualifications all whilst earning.

Who will I work for, and what will I do?

The Altrincham based employer is a small software development company with relatively complex internal systems and managed cloud deployments of its products. Today their software provides vital support for investigation teams in Banking and Insurance, Corrections and Law Enforcement, Brand Protection and Manufacturing Planning. They?ve successfully deployed solutions to organisations and agencies in Australia, across North America and in the United Kingdom. Their technology supports a wide range of investigation scenarios, from domain-focused analytical solutions for analysts and investigators, right up to robust enterprise-level systems for high-profile and high-pressure Major Case Management environments.

As part of a small company you will be rapidly taking on real responsibilities and making a significant contribution. The role will include opportunities for both core system administrator functions and DevOps work. As part of a small friendly team there will be continuous and close mentoring with flexible working hours. The Systems you?ll be involved with include Windows and Linux operating systems, SQL Server and Oracle databases, VMWare and Citrix deployments, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office 365 collaborative software. Most internal users are software developers with strong technical knowledge and rational requirements.

The position of Apprentice Systems Administrator is to provide IT systems support, covering server, network, database and web administration as well as communications and desktop support. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Performing routine audit of systems and software.

  • Applying operating system changes.

  • Installing and configuring new hardware and software.

  • Answering technical queries and assisting staff and customers.

  • Analyzing system logs and identifying potential issues with computer systems.

  • Providing documentation of server systems and software.

  • Troubleshooting any reported problems.

  • System performance tuning.

  • Ensuring that the network infrastructure is up and running.

What training will I receive?

Firebrand offers a unique Higher Level 4 IT Apprenticeship scheme that provides award-winning industry training and certifications, valuable work experience and offers on-going support all with the ultimate goal of securing you a long-term career within the world of technology.

During your 24 month IT apprenticeship programme, Firebrand will provide residential training at our distraction-free training centre. Our method of accelerated training allows you to achieve industry-recognised certifications such as CompTIA, ITIL and Microsoft faster, giving you more time to put your new skills in to practice within a working environment. Firebrand will also provide you with a Mentor who will be supporting and assisting you with your development. By the end of your 24 month apprenticeship, in addition to having numerous industry recoginesed qualifications, a steady career with a supportive employer, you will also be recognised by the British Computer Society (BCS) for entry onto the register of IT Technicians, confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence.

What experience do I need?

You will be reliable, trustworthy, motivated and confident to learn on your own initiative. You will be able to perform under pressure and show a commitment to quality through a thorough approach to work paired with the ability to communicate effectively as well as work both independently and as part of a team.

  • At least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including Maths, English and either IT or Science.

  • Ideally, you will have either a minimum of two A levels (or equivalent) a Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification or Level 3 BTEC

  • Competent at installing and configuring PC hardware and software (home PC is acceptable)

  • Some basic knowledge of operating systems, networks, servers and routers

  • Some experience in scripting or simple programming (e.g. web pages, operating system command scripts or office application scripts)

  • Aptitude for problem solving and trouble-shooting

  • Understands the basic principles of networking, protocols and associated technologies such as: OSI layer model, IP, TCP/IP, routing and switching, WANs, LANs)

  • Understands the architecture of a typical business IT system, including hardware, OS, server, virtualisation, middleware and applications

  • Understands security threats, firewalls and vulnerabilities

  • Understands the importance of service level agreements, standards and/or agreed response times and operates within these parameters

  • Ability to record and report information accurately to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders as well as progresses allocated tasks in accordance with reporting and quality systems

By working hard and demonstrating your ability, drive and commitment throughout your 2 year apprenticeship scheme, upon completion you will be offered a permanent contract ensuring you have further opportunities to continue growing within this exciting organisation.
