Process Technical Assistant (Chemist) - Overview:




  • Base salary: Competitive
  • Location: Barrow-in-Furness





  • Monitor and maintain process fluids against specification through routine and non-routine analysis, advising Operations and Field Chemist of necessary corrective action.
  • Ensures that the ongoing integrity of process plant safety and performance is maintained and operationally effective.
  • Assist in reviewing plant performance by devising and performing laboratory trials, maintaining records of findings/results and prepare/present reports of tests with any appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Identify areas for improvement or rationalisation of process plant and develop supporting rationale.
  • Assist in analytical test procedures and laboratory Standards of Competence ensuring their quality and validity and that all laboratory standards are maintained to ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Provide specialist technical advice and assistance to personnel within Production Operations and liaise with a diverse range of external analytical services and contracts enhancing in-house analytical expertise.
  • Conduct laboratory trials in support of commissioning activities supporting the new gas production facility.
  • Assist Operations in the sampling of liquids and solids for routine and non-routine testing from designated sample ports






Process Technical Assistant (Chemist) - The Role:




  • Routine analysis schedule maintained with accurate results produced
  • Completion of Laboratory results form for review prior to issue
  • Laboratory processes maintained to ISO 14001 standards
  • Use of Process and laboratory chemicals minimised
  • Safety, production and environmental risks are observed and managed in accordance with company policy
  • Routinely assess the effects of current activities advising measures to identify hazards, prevent pollution and minimise health and safety risks and environmental impacts to senior management.
  • On the basis of risk assessment provide safe, healthy and environmentally friendly working conditions, supported by laboratory systems. 
  • Reduce and where feasible eliminate discharges, emissions and waste that may have an adverse effect on the environment.
  • Use energy, chemicals and natural resources with increasing care and efficiency.
  • Co-operates with line managers, operations and supervisors in the prevention of work-related accidents and ill-health, and the promotion of environmental good practice by adopting appropriate behaviour.
  • Adheres to health, safety and environmental instructions and procedures.
  • Reports unsafe practices, behaviours and equipment, and health, safety and environmental concerns and incidents.
  • Supports a positive health, safety and environmental culture, offering improvement suggestions and participating in review of work practices and procedures.
  • Endeavours to apply good housekeeping in work areas.
  • Supports and participates in HS&E improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures correct PPE is worn for work activities.
  • Promotes continuous improvement on health and safety performance.
  • Promotes continuous improvement in environmental performance for demonstration of commitment to the ISO 14001 externally certified EMS.






Process Technical Assistant (Chemist) - The Person:




  • Degree in a Chemistry related discipline or HNC/D level qualification is acceptable when balanced with extensive operational experience, providing the underpinning knowledge.
  • Must have a background in laboratory analysis techniques,ideally within a complex process or chemical plant environment.
  • Possesses good communication skills, both written and oral, recognising the range of internal and external parties that he/she will liaise with.
  • IT software will support activities in recording/maintaining data and preparing reports, therefore knowledge of current PC software applications is needed.
  • Job holder must undertake a range of specialised technical and safety training including fire fighting and the use of self contained breathing apparatus.
  • Key competencies will include Problem solving, data gathering, high work standards,good communication skils and initiative, as the work requires attention to detail, trouble shooting and working with minimal supervision.
